Zoom and Resize Text

Users with low vision may prefer their browser resize text or zoom into page content to make it easier to read.

Enlarging text is primarily the browser’s responsibility. Browsers accomplish this chiefly in one of two ways: enlarging the font size only or zooming into the entire page and applying responsive styles, as appropriate.

Instructions for how to zoom or resize text in common browsers:

Results

  • As the website is designed to be fully responsive so that it can be used on PCs, Tablets and Smartphones, users on a PC can zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen.
  • This was tested using Chrome and Microsoft Edge with no issues found for the website pages.
  • With PDF Documents, the user can increase the size four-fold or use full width option with either browser without issue.

Assessment in Accessibility Insights for Web

An assessment is a comprehensive process that measures compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA success criteria. The assessment process includes approximately 24 tests, and each test covers one or more accessibility requirements.

There are three types of requirement:

  • Automated – the tool identifies instances and evaluates them automatically.
  • Assisted – the tool actively helps you identify or evaluate instances.
  • Manual – the tool provides instructions for identifying and evaluating instances.

Automated Checks

The Automated check in Accessibility Insights for Web was used to check the target page for compliance with dozens of accessibility requirements including colour contrast.

Results

  • All the website pages were tested with the Automated Check. The ones that did not pass were the following:
    • PDFs such as Minutes and Council Documents had 2 failed instances (no document title and no language attribute)
  • Actions: 
    • Consider where possible the replacement of PDFs with standard web pages, particularly the Council Documents (Policies and Procedures).
